Easy Buttercream Painted Christmas Cake - Wintery Cottages

Easy Christmas Cake Painting with Wintery Cottages

This beautiful Buttercream Painted Cake featuring wintery cottages surrounded by snowy landscape is so easy to create. In this step-by-step video, I’ll show you how to design this cake from scratch!

Let's go! Watch the video 👇

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Cake Base: A frosted cake with a smooth buttercream surface (I chose white/blue background).

  • Buttercream coloured with Oil/Gel Colours: In shades like light grey for cottages, green for trees, white for snow and red for baubles.

  • Piping Bags: This design doesn't need any nozzles. Just piping bags with small holes cut at the end.

  • Palette Knife: For painting

  • Toothpicks: For detailing

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Prepare Your Cake Canvas

Start with a cake that is fully frosted with a smooth layer of buttercream. I chose white/blue background. Chill the cake for 15-20 minutes in the refrigerator to ensure the surface is firm and ready for painting.

2. Sketch Your Wintery Cottages

Using a toothpick, lightly sketch the outline of your wintery cottages and trees. This will act as your guide.

3. Paint Cottages

Use a palette knife to spread grey buttercream for the cottages.

4. Add the Cottage Details

  • Windows and Doors: With a darker grey tone buttercream you can pipe windows/doors. Add small details like frames or wreaths on the door using green and red buttercream.

5. Create the Surrounding Landscape

  • Trees: Use a piping bag with a hole cut at the end and green buttercream to pipe zig zag lines resembling trees.

  • Snowdrifts: Use a palette knife to spread thick white buttercream around the base of the cottages and trees. Add texture by swirling the buttercream with cocktail sticks/toothpicks.

6. Final Touches

  •  Festive Decorations: Add tiny buttercream holly leaves, berries, or fairy lights to the cottages and trees.

  • Snowfall Effect: pipe white buttercream dots on the sky for a magical snow-fall look.

 Tips for Success:

  • Keep your buttercream at the right consistency: soft enough to spread but firm enough to hold details.

  • Use a chilled cake to make painting easier.

Whether you’re making this Wintery Christmas Cake for a party or for a customer, it’s sure to bring smiles and warm hearts.

Happy decorating, and Merry Christmas!
