Our first interview feature is with the talented Sana from ‘Cakes by Sana’
Sana is a self-taught cake artist who is running an extremely successful home baking business. She is truly an inspiration to any cake enthusiast as her designs reflect a host of skills. I am truly privileged to introduce Sana as my student who attended my Buttercream Masterclass. Here is the cake that she created just days after joining our class. A flawless beauty in every sense!
Tell us a bit about yourself and your business, Cakes by Sana.
I am a self-taught baker, and I run my business from my house. I do everything myself, from taking orders, running social media and to baking and designing the cakes. With the help and support of my family, I can proudly say this is a one-woman-show, and I love being a part of every step of the process! Cakes by Sana provides made-to-order specialty and novelty cakes and cupcakes, designed to meet your need entirely. Gift baskets, wedding cakes, cupcake platters – if you can think of it, I can make it.
When did you first start decorating cakes?
The first cake I decorated was for my daughter’s second birthday. I loved the whole process and it’s been an uphill journey ever since.
What was the process of choosing this as your career?
It started off as a crazy hobby, and I realised that this is what I loved doing and would want to spend my days doing. Investing in launching it as a career is one of the best decisions I have ever made. Most of all, I just love seeing people’s reactions when they see their vision of their perfect cake come to life.
How would you sum up your style and why?
My style has to vary because I take into account what each customer wants. Of course, I try to combine my ideas – I love flowers and delicate designs – with the occasion and the preference of the customer. I find that this process leads to a unique design. That’s why I wouldn’t constrain myself to just one particular style – I love trying it all and challenging myself.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Of course, social media is a goldmine for inspiration. I also observe the world around me and the interests people have – especially my kids! – helps me think of perfectly customized cakes.
Is it via social media that you found us? Please share us your experience of Buttercream Petals masterclass and how has it benefited your business?
Yes, the Buttercream Petals masterclass was extremely helpful for me and it has definitely changed the way I handle buttercream flowers. I learned flower piping techniques that I was always afraid of trying out and I also became comfortable using buttercream instead of just fondant.
What’s next for you?
I always want to continue learning and perfecting the art of baking as there is always room to grow!
