Buttercream basket weave technique is a skill in itself. You can use this technique on big cakes, small cakes, mini cakes and even cupcakes. This 'Floral Basket' Mini Cake is perfect for this Valentines day!

Let's get started.

Watch the Video below

(Make sure you read the blog first before watching the video as there are useful tips there)

Ingredients and Tools:

  • Mini Loaf Cakes
  • Concrete Coloured Buttercream for Basket
  • Red Coloured Buttercream for Flowers
  • Yellow Coloured Buttercream for Flowers
  • Green Coloured Buttercream for Leaves
  • Red/Black Coloured Buttercream for Ribbon
  • Colourmill Oil Based colours (Use Code NEETHA10 for 10% off)
  • Piping bags
  • Wilton 47 nozzle (for concrete buttercream basket weave)
  • Wilton 104 nozzle (for red buttercream flowers)
  • Wilton 352 nozzle (for green buttercream leaves)
  • Wilton 224 nozzle (for yellow buttercream flowers)
  •  Piping bags

Instructions:

1. Prepare Piping Bags:

  • Fill one piping bag with Concrete buttercream with a Wilton 47 nozzle for basket weave.
  • Fill one piping bag with Red buttercream fitted with a Wilton 104 nozzle for piping petals.
  • Fill one piping bag with Yellow and Uncoloured buttercream fitted with a Wilton 224 nozzle for piping drop flowers.
  • Fill a second piping bag with Green buttercream fitted with a Wilton 352 nozzle for creating leaves.
  • Fill piping bags with red/black Buttercream with a hole at the end (or writing nozzle Wilton 2) for piping ribbons

2. Basket Weaving on Cake

For my Cakes, I have used Concrete Coloured Buttercream to pipe the weaving. I coloured the Buttercream with Colourmill Concrete, you can also use a small amount of black gel colour to achieve this effect . Using Wilton 47 nozzle, pipe vertical lines all along the length of the cake. Now pipe short horizontal lines. Next step is to pipe another vertical line covering the end of the horizontal line. Repeat the process to create the basket weave. Watch the video to learn it well.

3. Piping Yellow Drop flowers

Use Wilton 224 nozzle with the yellow and white buttercream piping bags and pipe drop flowers on to the weaved cake. Hold the piping bag perpendicular to the cake and apply even pressure to release a small drop flower. Repeat this process until you get a bunch of small flowers.

4. Piping Red Flowers

With the Red buttercream piping bag and a Wilton 104 nozzle, pipe small petals on the cake. Hold the piping bag in a 30 degree angle with the wider end of the nozzle forming the bottom of the petal, and narrow end of the nozzle forming the top part of the petal. Pipe two fan shaped simple petals. Now pipe an upright petals and more petals kind of wrapping it all up. The number of petals determine the size of the flower.

5. Adding Leaves

Switch to the Green Buttercream piping bag fitted with Wilton 352 nozzle. Pipe small leaves around the flowers by applying gentle pressure and pulling away, creating a leaf shape. You can also pipe narrow stems under the bunch of flowers

6. Finishing off with Ribbon

Using a piping bag with red/black buttercream and a hole cut at the end (or writing nozzle Wilton 2), pipe small strands of buttercream resembling ribbons.

This is a perfect Valentines Day Mini-Cake with gorgeous piped Buttercream Flowers. Hope you will try this Cake Design and do share your creations with me, [email protected]
